Pooled Testing

The pooled testing will be made available for students and staff in grades kinder though grade 8. Additionally, NHS will make this available for athletes, band, cheer, and pom members.  The weekly pooled testing consists of a very shallow nasal swab, self-administered, in which samples will be "pooled" into one testing container for each group of 25 or less. (For classes of greater than 25 students/staff, a second "pool" will be used for that class.) The classroom samples will then be collected by health/office staff, scanned, and picked up by courier so that results are available in 24-48 hours. Site health staff will record the samples sent through a scan of barcodes through an online portal through which results will be viewed.

If one of the pooled samples comes back positive, then the students/staff in that pool will be administered a BinaxNOW rapid test on-site to identify any positive case(s) in that pooled group. Any positive rapid test results will be reported to local Health Department staff. In addition to using the BinaxNOW for this type of follow-up testing, the rapid tests can also be used for testing of students or staff (with signed consent) who experience a sudden onset of COVID19-like symptoms during the school day.
