Nogales athletes take home medals from Chandler meet

Nine members of the Nogales High School Track and Field team earned medals with top-three finishes at the 82nd Annual Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational last weekend.

Two NHS boys athletes earned first-place medals on Friday, March 25: Parker Jeong in the long jump and Oscar Contreras in the 400 meters.

Jeong’s winning jump of 19 feet, 5 inches established a personal record and Contreras’ time of 52.28 was a personal best as well.

Jeong and Contreras also teamed up with Arturo Alvarez and Brayan Chavez for third-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Javier Peralta took home two third-place medals by running the 1600-meter race in 5:15.1, and finishing the 3200-meter competition in 11:25.01. Benjamin Ley was third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.59.

On the girls side, Kimberly Clark came in first in the long jump, setting a personal record at the same time with a leap of 15 feet, 5.5 inches.

Johanna Simpson ran the 400 meters in 1:07.23, which was good for second place. Brianna Morgan finished the 300-meter hurdles in 49.62, a personal record and third best in her event.

The Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational is a long-running track meet that includes the participation of 160 high schools and 3,800 athletes.
