Nogales High School hosts Academic Decathlon Regional Competition

Nogales High School hosted the Region III United States Academic Decathlon Regional Qualifiers completion on Feb. 4 virtually with judges from across the state and even from California joining in to evaluate the students.          

Twelve teams with 97 overall competing students from region III participated in ten events which, began January 27 with essay writing and continuing to February 4, 2022 with speeches and interviews. The competition commenced on February 5 with objective testing in math, science, literature, social science, music, and art, as well as a super, quiz and awards ceremony, said Eric Sowle, NHS Athletic Director who was in charge of the event. 

“On Friday, February 4 we had volunteers throughout the community, student body, and across Arizona support our competing students by serving as judges for speeches and interviews which were conducted remotely,” Sowle said, adding that one judge who had competed in Academic Decathlon as a student even zoomed in from his home in California to judge in the interview category. 

The NHS team, coached by NHS teacher. Ravi Dutt, scored a combined total of 25,655.8 points, improving upon their place in last year's regional qualifier. The point total was sufficient for the NHS team to qualify for the state tournament to be held March 11-12, 2022.

NHS students captured the following medals:

Gold Medal (Essay) -Gael Tavera  - 880 points in the scholastic category.

Silver Medal (Interview)l-Harshita Chauniyal:- 990 points in the honors category.

Bronze medal (Essay)-Maria Urquidi. -816 points in the varsity category.

Bronze Medal (Math) Ian Padilla- 428 points in the scholastic category.

According it its website, the Academic Decathlon is an annual high school academic competition organized by the non-profit United States Academic Decathlon.  The competition consists of seven objective multiple-choice tests, two subjective performance events, and an essay. Academic Decathlon. Academic Decathlon is designed to include students from all achievement levels. The ten events require knowledge in art, economics, language and literature, math, music, science and social science. These topics, with the exception of math, are thematically linked each year. One of the multiple-choice events, alternating between science and social science, is chosen for the Super Quiz. In addition to the seven objective events, there are three subjective events graded by judges: essay, interview and speech.
