Students studying German at Nogales High School celebrated St. Nicholas Day by bringing shoes to their German class in hopes of getting chocolates or candy, as is the tradition in Germany on Dec. 6.

According to the tradition, children place their shoes outside their doorstep on Dec. 5. If they’ve been good, they receive treats. However, if they’ve been bad, they get coal instead.

German teacher Rene Ramirez said that a large number of students brought shoes to class as part of the cultural activity, since NHS now has a full German program with five classes, as well as an honors class.
