NHS fields its first-ever girls golf team

Six students at Nogales High School are breaking new ground this fall as the school’s first girls golf team.

The team of Fernanda Acosta, Martha Armendariz, Alondra Montano, Mia Morales, Jacqueline O’Neil and Frida Othon played their first match of the season on Tuesday, when they traveled north to take on Sahuarita High School at Torres Blancas Golf Course in Green Valley.

Two girls from each team had their games scored. O’Neil shot a 48 and Morales shot a 64 for Nogales.

The team will compete in the Girls Developmental League this year, while also competing individually during the NHS boys matches, said Athletic Director Eric Sowle.

“While we’ve had individual female golfers in previous years, this is our first girls golf team in Nogales High School history,” Sowle wrote in an email. “This is a great beginning to one of our newest programs, and I’m beyond excited to watch our girls compete as a team throughout the season.”
