The Nogales High School boys tennis team is 8-1 after its first nine matches of the season and ranked No. 6 among the state’s 67 Division II schools as of Thursday.

The Apaches have won five of their matches by 9-0 margins, including home contests on Monday against Douglas and Tuesday against Walden Grove. Their only loss came March 15 against traditional tennis powerhouse Catalina Foothills, and their only close win came March 4 at Rincon/University, when they eked out a 5-4 victory.

Senior Gustavo Acosta is in the No. 1 singles spot this year, with fellow senior Jose Rubio at No. 2.

Alex Duran, another senior, is the team’s No. 3 singles player, and sophomore Andre Favela plays at No. 4.

The No. 5 and 6 spots are currently held down by junior Ivan Rubio and freshman Diego Acosta, respectively. Senior Raymundo Ruiz, junior Gonzalo Armenta and sophomore Juan Pablo Lopez have also seen time on the court this season for NHS.

The Apaches defeated a shorthanded Pueblo team 8-1 on Thursday at home. Their next match is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday against Thatcher, at NHS.
