Kayla Barton was recently named a finalist for The Dr. Voie Stuart Chase Coy Scholar Activity Award given by the AIA! She's recognized for her success as a leader of the NHS Stunt & Cheer team, demonstrating integrity and high character, as well as her academic accomplishments. All finalists for the award will be recognized at the virtual Champions Gala on Saturday, May 22nd, which will be live-streamed on AZprep365. The two finalists named student of the year will receive a $5,000.00 scholarship.
In order to qualify, a student must have a cumulative GPA no less than 3.75, unweighted and have competed at the varsity level of an AIA sanctioned sport or activity for over 2 years. Not only did Kayla meet these requirements, but she also submitted an essay on the meaning of sportsmanship and a personal bio that included her future plans in order to submit for the prestigious award. Kayla has been an outspoken leader on our Stunt & Cheer team with many accomplishments to show for. Since joining the varsity team in August of 2017, Kayla has helped lead the team to 2 AIA State Championships and a USA National Championship while serving as an active member or officer in Student Council, Z Club, Interact Club, FBLA, and 3 National Honors Societies! Additionally, she's a captain of the Girl's Track & Field Team. Kayla was recently accepted into the University of California - Los Angeles where she plans to double major in Sociology and Business Economics. She plans to eventually enter into the field of Criminal Justice and Law.
Kayla has accomplished so much and worked so hard throughout her 4 years at Nogales High School. She's a person or high moral standards and one that her peers and younger students look up to and idolize. We're very proud of Kayla and can't wait to see what she accomplishes with her bright future!
